What Can Twitter Do For Me?

Business:

We've spoken to countless people in business over the years - some of whom are unfortunately no longer in business. Many had a common regret - they missed the boat with the first Internet boom. They never understood the power and the potential of the web until far too late in the day. Some went bust and others are forever playing catchup to their competitors who grasped the huge opportunity.

Don't miss the boat for a second time

Education, Conferencing & Communications

Twitter is becoming a de facto method of communication at Conferences and Conventions. Analysts are also expecting an explosion of Twitter use within mainstream education.

Web 2.0 - DO NOT GET LEFT BEHIND

You may have heard of Web 2.0 already - it's the next generation of web applications that facilitate interactive information sharing, interoperability, user-centered design and collaboration on the World Wide Web.

One of the key areas of Web 2.0 centres around the social networking boom. Twitter is the fastest growing social networking site with an estimated 92 million users by the end of 2009 (Source: Business Spectator)

Ok, we've established the phenomenal growth of Twitter and it's pivotal role in the next generation of Internet applications. The big question is...

How Can I Utilise Twitter To Gain Visibility, Web Traffic, Leads And More Sales For My Business?

Case Study

Here's what happened when Chris Savage, the chief executive of Wistia.com, searched for the phrase "private video sharing" on Twitter.

One post he found read, "A teacher requested a private 'video sharing' Web site so that specialists can observe student behavior—can anyone refer one?"

That got Savage's attention. He e-mailed back: "Still looking for a private video sharing site?"

Minutes later came the reply: "YES! It's the first request for one—thought I'd hit up my tweets before [I] go digging."

Savage: "Cool. You may want to check out Wistia.com. Full disclosure, I'm the CEO; -)"

The above example is a simple illustration of a savvy business owner using the Twitter search facility to look up terms relating to his business service. He found a Twitter user who had "tweeted" the need, he offered a solution and ended up with a new client. Beats cold calling? Definitely. He knew the client needed and wanted the service before he made an approach and ultimately provided the solution.

Twitter Tip #1

"Follow" people and businesses that are having success with Twitter. It's good practice.

Twitter Tip #2

"Follow" your own competitors - find out what they doing and what they are planning to do. You will also see which other Twitter users are "following" them. Potential clients?

Success Story

"We receive several hundred visits to our site each month from Twitter that adds to our traffic and page views"

The above example shows how Your individual tweets can drive additional traffic to your own website. Running a promotion? Put it out on Twitter. It pays dividends.

Example of Use

Tweets can be automated in advance. Using various tools, a Twitter user can develop a campaign with time-delivered tweets against a specific schedule. (Similar to an email auto responder campaign system such as getresponse or aweber). This is a great method for managing campaign launches.

There are many third party tools that can be plugged into Twitter to improve it's efficiency in contributing to your business. We look at various tools in the Twitter Platinum Collection.

Success Story

The recent spectacular success achieved by Moonfruit, a British based web hosting company, has again focused the attention of the marketing world on the phenomenon known as Twitter.

Following a relatively simple promotion, their brand awareness went through the roof with traffic to their website increasing by 200% in the UK and a whopping 1000% in the US. People have signed up to try out their products in droves, up by over 350%.

The above example is a simple illustration of how Twitter can skyrocket sales in a highly cost-effective way over a far shorter time period than conventional offline marketing.

Example of Use

Dennis, a salesman at design and print agency had managed to book an appointment with the office manager of a leading Public Relations company in the North West.

Typically, Dennis would attempt to find out as much about each person he was meeting in advance - usually through asking around and a couple of Internet searches. In this case, Dennis was pleased to find out Mr Cooper was a user of Twitter and posted regular blogs.

Carefully perusing Mr Cooper's history of updates, Dennis figured out the office manager was a supporter of Arsenal FC, enjoyed Italian food and had previously grumbled on his Twitter account about unprepared sales callers arriving without samples.

Dennis used the intelligence wisely - arranging to take the potential client to lunch (naturally an Italian restaurant), made some small talk regarding football - namely Arsenal FC (Mr Cooper's favourite team), showed an extensive range of samples and left with his biggest order of the month.

This example illustrates how Twitter can be used as an excellent intelligence gathering tool for progressing business objectives.

Example of Use

Michael ran a small a small wholesale business. A client (we'll call them ABC Holdings) had a Twitter account where the managing director would post regular blogs - not only relating to ABC Holdings but also interlaced with personal updates.

Michael used his own Twitter account to "follow" the ABC Holdings tweets and keep up to date with what was happening in the world of his client. A number of updates inadvertently warned Michael that the client was running into rather severe financial difficulties. Several days later Michael was asked to make a large delivery on the premise that his business would be paid a few days later (this went against their usual terms of business). Michael wasn't prepared to extend the usual terms feeling he would be leaving his own business in a very vulnerable position if payment wasn't forthcoming.

The client went bust several weeks later and most of his suppliers were left without payments. Michael's clever use of Twitter and his own intuition allowed him to avoid a heavy (and potentially catastrophic loss) to his own business.

Another example of how Twitter can be used as a mechanism for business intelligence.
