Twitter is essentially a free micro blogging service with a 140 character maximum. It's a medium for short, bite-sized personal updates.
For example, a top executive might blog all day about his opinions on financial and business news, but then at the end of the day, post an update saying, "Bad day at the office. I need a beer..." These types of posts reflect the human being aspect and the great thing about Twitter is that users can blog about pretty much anything!
For example, people blog about all types of things - from how they are feeling, their opinions on current issues through to requests for help.
By default, peoples twitter updates are public - meaning anybody can look them up. You can also "follow" other Twitter users - this provides you with their updates automatically without having to carry out a search. Likewise other users can follow your tweets.
Twitter accounts themselves are free, but there are also dozens of third party tools, applications and design features you can plug-in to Twitter to maximise the benefits of the experience and tap into the community for the benefit of business. Earlier this year, Dell Computers estimated they had made over a million dollars by plugging into Twitter.
Note: We discuss third party tools in our Platinum Twitter Collection.
